Case-Based Learning Activity
Here is an example of a case-based learning activity I created.

Topic: Human Impact on Sea Turtles
Grade level: High School

Virginia Standards of Learning (VSOL's):

Primary
BIO.8 The student will investigate and understand dynamic equilibria within populations, communities, and ecosystems. Key concepts include
a) interactions within and among populations including carrying capacities, limiting factors, and growth curves;
d) the effects of natural events and human activities on ecosystems;
Secondary:
BIO.1 The student will demonstrate an understanding of scientific reasoning, logic, and the nature of science by planning and conducting investigations in which
b) hypotheses are formulated based on direct observations and information from scientific literature;
e) conclusions are formed based on recorded quantitative and qualitative data;
Learning Objectives:
Essential Question:
-
How are humans impacting the earth’s environment and can you give an example of a species other than humans that is being affected and how you can tell they are being affected?
Understand:
-
As the human population increases, so does human impact on the environment. Human activities, such as reducing the amount of forest cover, increasing the amount and variety of chemicals released into the environment, and intensive farming, have changed Earth’s land, oceans, and atmosphere. Some of these changes have decreased the capacity of the environment to support some life forms.
Know:
-
Abiotic factors are the nonliving elements in an ecosystem, such as temperature. Biotic factors are all the living organisms that inhabit the environment including predators.
-
Sea Turtles have been affected by Human Impact due to climate change, which is changing their environment and sex ratios of the species.
Do:
-
evaluate examples of human activities that have negative and positive impacts on Virginia’s ecosystems.
