Mollie Deuel's Teaching Portfolio

Safety in the Science Lab
It is imperative that a strict safety protocol be followed in the classroom by teachers and students to reduce the risk of accident or injury. I would give a lab safety lesson, starting out by showing the following video:

I will then go over this Safety Contract with my students and have them and their parents sign off on it to make sure the students are held accountable for their actions in the laboratory. After going over the safety contracts, I will give the students a safety scavenger hunt and incorporate all of the lab equipment (including the safety equipment) in the classroom. I will label all of the equipment around the room with the proper name and a number. The students will have a worksheet with a table that has boxes that are labeled with numbers starting at 1. They will need to search the class until they have found all of the equipment with the corresponding numbers on their paper. As the students come across each new piece of equipment they will be instructed to copy down the name of it. Once the students have identified all of the equipment, I will give a lesson on how each piece of safety equipment is properly used.
The next day, after the students bring back their safety contracts they will take This Safety Exam to assess their knowledge on lab safety.

At the end of the lesson students should be able to:

1) Describe general lab safety procedures.
2) Locate safety and emergency equipment in a science lab.
3) Demonstrate proper use of safety equipment found in a science lab.
