Mollie Deuel's Teaching Portfolio

Here is an example of a station-based or learning center activity.

Topic: Human Impact: Cell Division
Grade level: High School

Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs):

BIO.5 The student will investigate and understand common mechanisms of inheritance and protein synthesis. Key concepts include a) cell growth and division;

Learning Objectives:

Understand:
-
In order for an organism to grow and survive, it's cells must reproduce

Know
-
Mitosis produces two genetically identical cells.
-
There are four stages of mitosis: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.
-
Cytokinesis is the division of the cytoplasm and organelles

Do
-
create a diagram to model the stages of mitosis and explain the processes occurring at each stage.

Students will be: Divided into groups and rotating throughout the stations whenever the teacher tells them to switch. The will interact with the material at each station along with their group members to complete each of the given tasks
Teacher will be: facilitating the stations by keeping time and letting the students know when to rotate.

Assessment: Teacher can give an exit card or a short quiz at the end of class assessing the students learning.
